Film Distribution is the key to a successful film.

But the average filmmaker has little to no understanding of Distribution.

Even if you've listened to some panels at a film festival and have a basic understanding of how it works, you'd be surprised at how specific it really is.

Filmmakers think - if I make a good film, people will want to see it and therefore Distributors will want to buy it. And if they buy it, that means it will be a success. 

The sad reality is, that's not necessarily the case. 

Distributors turn down great films all the time because they don't feel they can sell the movie (according to their formula). 

And other times, they may take on your film and do absolutely nothing with it... and your window of opportunity to make money rapidly closes. 

Yes, there is a ticking clock. 

It's so exciting to get that deal, but getting a Distribution deal doesn't equal success. It doesn't guarantee your film will be seen and it certainly doesn't guarantee that you will see any money. 

In most cases, Distributors & Sales Agents are looking out for themselves and not you. 

I've seen deals structured that would make it almost impossible for the filmmaker to see a dime unless the film miraculously became lightning in a bottle.

And those types of deals are the norm. 

It's not the filmmakers fault. 

You likely didn't go to business school and the details about Distribution are usually not taught in film school. 

If you want to make sure your film gets seen and money flows back to you, there are some essential things you need to know... 

If you think you can go to a festival and secure theatrical distribution, you're setting yourself up for a major downfall.

Only a few Film Festivals provide the opportunity to get a decent Distribution deal and they are very selective. For one of the prominent festivals, around 2% of submissions get accepted and maybe 2% of those get a lucrative deal. 

Going to film festivals and hoping someone will pick up your film is like buying a lottery ticket. You spend money to throw your hat in the ring and you hope that it works out. 

Hope is not a good business plan. 

If you’re like me, you’ve invested so much blood, sweat, and potentially years of your life making your film and you want it to be seen by as many people as possible. Not to mention, you want it to make money. 

So how do you do that? 

1) You need to get the RIGHT Distribution.

Getting the wrong Distribution can feel worse than getting no Distribution at all. 

The last thing you want is to sign with a Distributor who completely misrepresents your film or takes all the money. Or worse, does nothing with it at all but you’re locked into a contract. 

2) You need to make sure you’re presenting your film the RIGHT way.

There are very specific things you have to have in place in order to ensure that your film is even Distributible. Documents, files, marketing materials. 

If you don’t have ALL of them, it can kill your deal. And if they aren’t in the proper format or done right, it will crush all hopes of getting ANY Distribution.

“But my film is so good, they’ll love it.”

It doesn’t matter how great of a film you’ve produced. If you don’t have your ducks in a row, it’s very likely that no one will distribute your film. 

This means no Distribution Deal. Investors don’t get their money back and this hugely impacts whether or not you’ll be able to make another film. 

Since the goal is to make your next film, you need to make sure you’re set up for success.

Over the years, my producing partner and I produced quite a few independent feature films.
